The most complex component of any garage door is the garage door opener and its connected nuts, bolts, and hardware. You’ve got to deal with the drive mechanism, the long tracks, the tightly-wound and dangerous springs, the brackets, and more. All of these components combine to make the garage door open smoothly and securely time and time again, regardless of how much you employ it.

However, not all are created equal- in fact, each and every brand name and every design has diverse dimensions, designs, and components, and a few even use totally distinct mechanisms to run. In reality, you can find 3 principal categories of garage door openers, including CHAIN DRIVE (the most basic, and noisiest), SCREW DRIVE (somewhat quieter but still fairly loud), and rubber BELT DRIVE (the quietest.) These all use similar physics but various specifics to wrench open your doorway daily. There's also a 4th category: DIRECT DRIVE. This wall mounted option is best for circumstances where's there's not enough space above your vehicle to accomodate a ceiling mounted opener, or when you have a bedroom directly about the garage, as the sounds and vibrations will not travel as easily through the ceiling.

One of the most important components of an opener (for generating lift) will be the spring. The springs are beneath plenty of pressure, and they are quite powerful when they are in high-tension. This really is what gives them the ability to heave open the massive doorway, which, if you think about it, is very large. In the event you search inside your garage, you may see your extension springs on each and every side.

Some openers use extension springs, and a few use torsion springs, based on whether it is a single or double car garage door. Torsion springs are attached to a header on the doorway, and these too can be highly dangerous if tampered with or handled improperly. Torsion springs wind, rather than basically expanding and contracting like a slinky. The winding is what produces the tension, and what tends to make torsion springs so much more hazardous than the already-dangerous extension spring. Any garage door installation professional or business can attest to the high risk of working with springs.

You’ll find other complicated, moving parts linked to opening this sort of a huge doorway, as well, not the least of which are the cable drums, the vertical and horizontal tracks, the brackets, the track hangers, and too many numerous screws, hinges, and plates to even contemplate counting. All of those small metal and plastic bits are what keeps your garage door running safely and smoothly.
