Spring Cleaning: Tips for Organizing Your Garage

Garage One - Thursday, April 05, 2018

When it comes to your garage, it’s easy to let the mess get so bad that it looks more like a landfill than a part of your home. This spring, why not clean out and reorganize the entire layout of your garage? At Garage One, we take pride in our ability to provide solutions for the organization of your garage. Our team of trained professionals will do everything they can to show you the different ways to keep your garage neat and tidy all year round.

Spring Cleaning

Start from scratch

It’s always easier to start from square one. This spring, start the process of reorganizing your garage by completely tearing apart any old system you had in place. First of all, it’s important to determine what does and what doesn’t belong in your garage. Here is a short list of items that should be cut from your garage:

  • Extreme temperatures (hot or cold) will ruin your paint. Consider storing these in a more temperature-controlled environment.
  • Propane is highly flammable and should always be kept outdoors.
  • Paper plates and cups. These tend to attract pests and should be stored in the pantry.
  • A fridge is a massive waste of space in your garage. If you really need a second refrigerator, consider putting it in the basement.

Draft a floor plan

Now that you’ve rid your garage of everything that doesn’t belong, it’s time to plan out your storage space. Think about the things you own. How many of them do you use together? Gardening tools should always be stored in one location; same goes with pool cleaning equipment and construction tools. This way you won’t ever be stuck spending unnecessary time looking for that one thing you need to get the job done. Bigger items like lawn mowers and weed trimmers should always be stored in corners so as not to cause any additional clutter.

Use vertical space

One of the best ways to ensure that you use all the space in your garage is to go vertical. Using pegboards to hang tools and sports equipment can go a long way to maximizing available storage space in your garage. You can also use ceiling hooks to hang bicycles and ladders.

Must-have storage products

Before you start, be sure to gather all the supplies you’ll need for spring cleaning success. This should include cleaning products and garbage bags as well as a variety of storage solutions (stackable bins, locked cabinets, etc) to sort and house your items of all sizes.
