Garage One - Friday, March 09, 2018

Working from home has its own pros and cons. You can set your own hours and be your own boss however home is often a place ripe with distractions. When you run your own business, you can’t always justify spending the extra money to rent an office just for yourself. Many self-employed people choose to convert a part of their house into a home office. We here at Garage One recommend you use your garage as a place to set up your office so it won’t interfere with the rest of your home. Having a separation between your work and living space is important. Let us walk you through the different steps to take in order to create a home office in your garage.

  • Heating
Your garage can be a pretty cold place. If you’re planning to use it as an office space, it’s important that you address the issue of how you’re going to stay comfortable in the long months of winter. Insulating your garage will keep the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer. We recommend using a space heater in the desired area around your workspace. Also, be sure to insulate your garage as much as possible by covering the garage door with a blanket and making sure all the cracks are sealed tightly.
  • Pick your spot
You probably won’t need your entire garage for a proper office space. You’ll undoubtedly still want to use your garage… well… as a garage. Be sure to section off your office from the rest of the storage space inside. Use folding room dividers as walls that keep you separated and with a sense that you have a room just for yourself. To make your spot even more comfortable, use outdoor carpets to keep the floors warm and avoid walking on cold concrete the entire day.
  • You need natural sunlight
Your garage probably doesn’t have very many windows. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your office, you might want to consider making some to let in a bit of natural sunlight. Without natural sunlight, you’ll end up feeling like you work inside a dungeon. We offer customized garage door design to create the perfect setting for your space. If you happen to be a renter and construction isn’t an option, consider hanging up pictures of the outdoors around your workspace to create the illusion of the outdoors and add some colour to your day.
  • A fan for summer
Just as your garage can be cold during the winter, it could also get pretty hot in the summer. Be sure to invest in a quality fan that will make the heat bearable throughout the summer.
