Garage door safety tips

Garage One - Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Did you know that the average two-car garage door can weigh anywhere between 150 and 250 pounds? More if it’s made of wood. And while most modern garage doors have built-in safety mechanisms, they should still be treated as a potential hazard. Just imagine if the full weight comes crashing down on you or someone else. That’s not a scenario any of us want to see happen.  Here are some safety guidelines to keep you and your family safe.

Take precautions if you have children

Kids are especially vulnerable to accidents. Their innate curiosity, adventurousness and lack of inhibition can put them at risk. It’s up to parents to educate, monitor and take precautions in regards to keeping their children safe around garage doors. What measures can you take? Consider implementing the following:

  • Place garage door openers out of reach of little hands. At least five feet off the ground is best.
  • Likewise, keep remotes in a location where your children can’t get at them.
  • Teach children to be cautious around your garage door.
  • Never allow a child to race under a garage door that’s in motion.
  • Hands and fingers should be kept away from a garage door that’s opening or closing.

Perform routine inspections

Like any mechanical device, garage doors consist of a number of parts. These can wear down after a while and, if not repaired or replaced, an accident may result. Once a month, inspect the various components including:

  • Release mechanisms
  • Springs
  • Rollers
  • Pulleys
  • Cables
  • Tracks

Additionally, you should check your garage door’s reverse mechanism every month. You can do this by sliding a block of wood or cardboard box under the door. If the garage door doesn’t stop, you need to call for service.

Avoid a DIY approach

If after your inspection you feel your garage door is in need of repair, it’s best to call for service from your Toronto garage door specialist. While basic maintenance tasks like applying lubricant to moving components and replacing weather stripping can easily be done on your own, more heavy duty tasks should be delegated to a professional. It’s especially important to not attempt to perform a spring adjustment on your own. At best you may damage the door and at worst you may injure yourself or another person. Always call in a professional for garage door repair and installation.
