Garage One - Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Home garages are a convenient and practical addition to any home, but they also take up a large portion of your home's facade. You want to make sure that your garage door matches the overall look of your house as well as the look and feel of your neighbourhood. You don't want your garage door to negatively impact your curb appeal as a garish and outdated garage door can bring down the value of your home.

Not sure where to start? Here are some tips to get you on the right track to choosing the perfect garage door colour.

Building materials. Before you even begin to look at paint swatches, you should take into consideration your home's building materials. Houses made out of wood do well with complimentary warm colours, such as browns and reds. However, if your house is made of red brick choosing a tan colour that matches the mortar in the brick makes for a complimentary combination.

Contrast or blend. Deciding if you want your garage door to make a statement or blend in with its surroundings will narrow your search and help you focus on a particular look. Warm colours add richness and depth, dark colours make a statement, whites are brightening, and vivid colours give contrast.

Match the right parts. Generally, experts agree that matching your garage door to your home's window trim rather than the front door is a good choice. It all depends on where you want the focus to be. On the other hand, if you don't want to draw attention to you garage door, consider painting it the same colour as your house.

Let your personality shine through. Doing research and reading about the dos and don'ts of choosing a garage door colour will help you make a decision, but if you don't personally enjoy the colour of your garage door there isn't much point to the whole endeavour. In the end the colour you choose should reflect your personality. That said, painting your garage door with two different colours or with two-tone paint will give your home an outdated look.
